Rowdeford Arts Centre
Wiltshire County Council
Background
A Grade II listed coach house with two wagon sheds and central stalls in the middle of the school site had fallen into disrepair. The governors and school trust set about raising the funds to bring the building back into life as a new Arts Centre.
Design
The front of the building has been carefully restored and partially rebuilt to its former glory with the help of some old photographs. A new performance studio has been slotted into the courtyard to the rear as a modern cedar clad element with frameless oriel windows to the garden beyond. Scissor trusses are expressed internally and lit from above with roof lights.
Technical
The historic fabric and original details of the existing building have been carefully restored with natural stone and lime mortars. The new work has unashamedly clean contemporary lines to contrast and complement the craftsmanship of the original, with steel, glass and timber detailing.
